STATON-SHUY RESIDENCE

UNIVERSITY AREA

This existing home is located in the University area of Missoula where a developer built numerous single level ranch homes over the old University of Montana track. To remodel this home and still have it fit in with the historic context of the surroundings and its adjacent neighbors a mid-century Frank Lloyd Wright influenced design was used. Long horizontal lines with low hipped roofs connect this home to its site and minimize the scale and height of a significant second floor addition. The use of the existing brick with a new stucco finish further enhances the design intent. The interior architecture is equally distinct. The use of hardwood throughout the home creates a smooth transition when moving from room to room. Clerestory windows below fir ceiling beams bring in natural light emphasizing the spacious and lofty atmosphere. The design of vaulted ceiling in the great room creates a stunning focal point. The use of fir wood creates visual texture and interest. This home is an example of completely renovating and expanding an existing home yet blend with it existing architectural context.
